Maria Izabella Lehtsaar is an artist working in Tallinn. She graduated from the EKA graphic art department with a bachelor's degree and earned a master's degree in EKA's contemporary art speciality. Lehtsaar works primarily with underrepresented queer experience and narrative, often playing with the boundaries between reality and fantasy. Her works often tell of spaces and hidden symbols, and of coded meanings in queer and lesbian material culture. In her work she weaves together pop culture aesthetics and sensitive monochrome graphic art, combining them in practice with textile, drawing and poetry. The use of different media in her works distorts the familiar, creating multilayered meanings. Lehtsaar's first solo exhibition "Sinikalilla" took place in 2024. In addition, the artist has taken part in several group exhibitions, for example at the Lithuanian Museum of Contemporary Art (MO museum) in the exhibition "We Don't Do This. Intimacy, Norms and Fantasies in Baltic Art". The artist received the Wiiralt Prize in 2023. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
