Maria Evestus (born 1986 in Kuressaare) graduated from the Tartu Art College (now Pallas) with a degree in painting (2014). Since 2013 she has actively participated in exhibitions and Estonian art auctions, and since 2019 she has been a member of the Tartu Artists' Union. The artist about herself: "I am a painter who uses nostalgic elements and symbols as a gateway into the viewer's subconscious. My works are dominated by a layered mixed technique, where collage, acrylic painting, effect varnishes, graphite, fabrics etc. meet. An important part of my works is their carefully chosen limited colour scheme and rhythmicity, the main source of inspiration being (Nordic) nature and all kinds of contrasts of content and form. I am interested in interpreting today's world, with its ever more densely layered history, through the mixing of different eras and symbols, creating dreamlike illustrative universes. As an artist I consciously address the viewers' collective subconscious through familiar symbols, often drawn from nature, local and foreign fairy tales and legends, sometimes mixed with pop-culture elements from recent decades. These are open-ended, timeless stories into which the viewer can place themselves as a bold adventurer or a wise storytel. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
