1993–
Kogo galerii; NOBA
Madlen Hirtentreu (1993) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work encompasses sculpture and site-specific installations. She has earned a bachelor's degree in visual communication from the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan and a master's degree in sculpture and installation art from the Estonian Academy of Arts. The driving force of Hirtentreu's work is memory, history and the exploration of materiality, through which she blurs the boundaries between archaeology, speculative fiction and industrial aesthetics. These sculptures and installations can be both historical excavations and speculative visions of the future. Her works often refer to absence or a lost presence. In her works one frequently encounters ghostly, hybrid and fragmentary bodies or abandoned structures, which evoke the feeling that something once existed but no longer exists fully. Hirtentreu offers an alternative view of history, seeing it not as a fixed past but as a process in constant interpretation. She treats objects and materials as fossils of an unknown future.
