Matti Varik (1939–2011) became one of the most prominent creators of public sculptures and monuments in Estonia during the 1960s-1970s, though his free creative work of the 1970s was equally innovative. He brought coloured figures to sculpture exhibitions, preferring bronze as a material, but also created large-format figures from dolomite. The monuments he created during the Soviet era as state commissions (for example the monument to the victims of fascism in Kuressaare, 1965, the monument to the Battle of Tehumardi, 1967, both together with Riho Kulla, the sculptural part of the Maarjamäe memorial complex, 1975) are resolved innovatively and mark a turn in Estonian monumental art towards effective laconicism. His monumental work is characterised by a forceful plastic form, compactness and balanced composition. The best works of this period, such as the monument to V. I. Lenin in Kotka (1979), the monument to Ernst Särgava in Tallinn (1985) and the public sculpture "Perekond" erected in Berlin (1984), employ a novel formal language and adapt successfully to their surroundings. His monumental work, which met the expectations of the era, brought him social recognition in the 1970s-1980s. After Estonia regained independence, he created successful monuments both at home and abroad. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
