Ellen Kolk (1942) belongs to the circle of women artists who changed the overall picture of Estonian art exhibitions at the beginning of the 1970s. As with several of her contemporary young women sculptors in the early 1970s, Ellen Kolk's arrival at art exhibitions can also be linked to the revaluation of aestheticism in sculpture. It was she who brought bronze back into exhibition halls as a sculptural material, considerably before the beginning of the regular bronze casting of ARS Monumentaal. The "Venus" completed in 1970 is one of the first full figures in the new aestheticist manner. Kolk has been interested both in motifs derived from ancient mythology and in classicistically ennobled imagery and allegorical choice of themes. Elements of nature appear as attributes in several figural compositions. Sensitively modelled sculptures with masterly surface treatment connected with the aesthetics of the new generation of the early 1970s. The works are figural, distinguished by precise modelling, clear classical formal language and masterly surface treatment. Most of the works are executed in bronze, but she has also created works in marble and dolomite. Chamber-like figures and portraits have over the years found their way into public space (e.g. the green area with a pool in front of the North Estonia Medical Centre in Mustamäe, Kuressaare Hospital, Maardu Manor, Palmse Manor, the Commandant's Garden on Toompea in Tallinn, SEB Bank in Tallinn, the Russian Embassy in Luxembourg). Kolk graduated from Tartu Art School in 1962 and from the State Art Institute of the ESSR in the speciality of sculpture in 1967. She has been awarded the Kristjan Raud Prize (1981).
