Mare Mikof

He entered the art world in the early 1970s, when a new aesthetic that touched all fields of art began to characterise the developing field of sculpture as well. The hyperrealism and pop art that influenced his early years of creative work merged early on with a grotesque depiction of the human figure that had already taken shape. To this day the author builds his compositions as humorous stagings. In the 1970s Mikoff's over-life-size portraits astonished the Estonian art public. He has mostly portrayed great men who reached the top of the social hierarchy; his recognisable and classically clear-lined portrait solutions always also contain something ironic. He has also created well-known public sculptures. He has contributed to a perfect play of form and the interaction of surprising materials. At present his arsenal includes dry humour, deliberately temporary materials and a constant readiness to experiment. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
