1956– · Estonian painter (born 1956)

Trell was born in the town of Jõhvi and began painting in 1973. The period when Trell worked together with Rein Kelpmann as an advertising artist at Tallinn Food Store No. 2 (located at the corner of Sepa and Kopli streets) was the time when his handwriting as a painter took shape. He has been a member of the Estonian Artists' Association since 1986. An important impulse to paint was the psychological state of a person in the repressive Soviet society of that time. Painting was driven by the need to work through the tensions within himself in that situation. Many figurative paintings were created at that time, dominated by psychological symbolism and, beneath the layers, always Trell's characteristic irony. It is clear that in the system of that time these works reached overview exhibitions only through a serious gauntlet, and there were paintings that never reached exhibitions at all due to the jury's caution. In the late 1980s and early 1990s the artist's handwriting changed somewhat. It acquired more symbolism and abstract elements. From that time few works have survived in the homeland, since most reached and remained in Finland and elsewhere abroad. In 1992, during the Saaremaa period, the works became increasingly abstract, and among them there were only a couple of portraits. From the late 1990s a long expressive.
