NOBA
Valerija Oja (b. 2002) is an artist based in Tallinn, who works mainly with painting, but also with monumental painting techniques and various material-based practices. In 2026 she completed her bachelor's studies in painting at the Estonian Academy of Arts, and in 2023–2024 she studied as an exchange student at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe in Germany. In her work, Oja explores corporeality, vulnerability and materiality, moving along the borderline between figuration and abstraction. She is interested in opposing states and their coexistence – tenderness and violence, fragility and resilience, the organic and the artificial. Human and animal forms, personal experiences and existential themes intertwine in her works. She has participated in exhibitions in Estonia and Germany, including the duo exhibition Maybe We Should Sleep on the Floor Tonight (Schaudepot am Marktplatz, Karlsruhe, 2023), the group exhibition Õnnekompost (Narva Art Residency, 2024), and the duo exhibition Ma ei taha veel üles ärgata (Täisnurga Gallery, Tallinn, 2026). In 2024–2025 she worked as a gallerist at Täisnurga Gallery. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
