1940– · Estonian sculptor (1940-2024)
Eesti Ajaloomuuseum; Eesti Kunsti Oksjonid; Eesti Kunstimuuseum; Eesti Teatri- ja Muusikamuuseum; Tartu Kunstimuuseum
trained at Estonian Academy of Arts
Tõnu Maarand (1940) created, in the late 1960s and in the 1970s, both figure compositions with generalized form and characteristic portraits of Estonian cultural figures. As materials he used bronze as well as wood and hammered copper. In his later work, portraiture takes up an ever greater share of the sculptor's output. In the 1980s–1990s Maarand designed memorials and monuments, as well as gravestone monuments and decorative wall panels. He has also been creatively active in the first decade of the 21st century. He graduated in 1965 from the ESSR State Art Institute as a sculptor and has long been a teacher of sculpture. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
