1952– · Estonian glass artist (born 1950)
Eesti Kunsti Oksjonid; Eesti Kunstimuuseum; Haus Galerii; NOBA
trained at Estonian Academy of Arts
Rait Prääts (1952) began his artistic career by creating large stained-glass windows for public spaces, including for St. Nicholas' Church and the National Library. In glass he developed his own authorial technique, which allowed him to paint, so to speak, three-dimensionally. Moving in the direction of sculpture, he uses cement mixtures for modelling, to which he adds painted glass details, achieving a kind of synthesis between painting and sculpture. Prääts graduated from the Estonian State Art Institute in the speciality of glass art (1975), has taken part in numerous exhibitions both in Estonia and internationally, and has also received a number of accolades, including the Kristjan Raud Prize (2013). His (commissioned) works have reached many places around the world and many collections. Prääts is a member of the Estonian Glass Artists' Union and an honorary member of the Estonian Artists' Association. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
