Joann Sõstra was born in 1913 by Lake Peipsi in the village of Lisje, into a family with many children. He attended four classes of village school, and already at the age of 15 Joann worked at the Lauassaare peat bog, later doing forestry work. In 1932 Joann Sõstra went to Kanaküla in Pärnu County for forestry work, where he ended up boarding at the Leppoja farm. There Joann Sõstra found himself a new home, and in addition to three stepchildren, 4 more children were born with the mistress of the house, Olga. Due to the nationalisation of farmlands, Joann Sõstra moved to Viljandi in 1949 to work as a logger at the Forestry Combine. In 1967 he went to work at the Kilingi-Nõmme Demonstration Forestry Enterprise, where he was engaged in various forestry tasks. After a heart attack in 1977, when his health no longer allowed heavy physical work, he devoted himself increasingly to making wood sculptures. In addition to his very diverse work in wood sculpture, Joann Sõstra has made willow-withe furniture pieces, a garden gate, vases, walking sticks of curious shapes, wooden spoons and ladles, woven baskets and trays. It is difficult to determine the total number of his works, as no record has been kept of them. Many items have been given as gifts to acquaintances and relatives. Joann Sõstra has on several occasions been written about as a very hard-working man, but never as an amateur artist. Joann Sõstra died in 1992.
