1920–2001 · Estonian sculptor (1920-2001)
Eesti Ajaloomuuseum; Eesti Kunstimuuseum; Eesti Teatri- ja Muusikamuuseum; Tartu Kunstimuuseum
member of Estonian Artists' Association · trained at Estonian Academy of Arts
Erna Viitol (1920–2001) began her art studies in 1939 upon moving to Sweden, studying alongside work at the Viggbyholm Örjansgården free school. After returning to her homeland she began studies at the Tallinn School of Applied Art and in 1950 graduated from the Tallinn State Institute of Applied Art. In the 1960s–1970s she devoted herself to portraiture and created decorative sculptures with stylised form. Her legacy includes over 60 portraits, the best of which successfully use formal generalisation without losing the psychological individuality of the sitter. Viitol portrayed many members of her family as well as cultural figures close to her, from Estonia, Finland and elsewhere. As materials she used ceramics, epoxy resin, Indonesian wood, sheet copper, glass-reinforced plastic. Some of the works remained as plaster casts, without being executed in the final material.
