Adele Ulm-Augustas

1908–2000 · Estonian sculptor (1908-2000)
Eesti Kunstimuuseum; Underi ja Tuglase Kirjanduskeskus

trained at Estonian Academy of Arts

Adele Ulm-Augustas (1908–2000) graduated from the State School of Arts and Crafts in Tallinn in 1930. She studied sculpture at the Tallinn School of Applied Art from 1942 to 1944 and emigrated from Estonia to Sweden in 1944, moving on to the USA in 1949. In 1952 she graduated from the art school of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and in 1952, having moved to New York, she continued her studies at a design school there. She managed to fruitfully realise herself in exile, creating both figurative compositions and portraits, as well as abstract forms with a flowing formal language, following the example of Barbara Hepworth (1903–1975) and Henry Moore (1898–1986). She favoured rocks in various tones, whose finishing and surface treatment are of a high standard. She has belonged to artists' organisations, participated actively in exhibition life in the USA and elsewhere, and received awards. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
