1927–2013 · Estonian sculptor (1927-2013)
Eesti Kunstimuuseum; Eesti Teatri- ja Muusikamuuseum; Tartu Kunstimuuseum

trained at Estonian Academy of Arts

Lembit Tolli (1927–2013) graduated from the Estonian SSR State Art Institute in 1953 and began exhibiting his work the same year. His creative work of the 1950s follows nature and the recommended thematics of the time. The modernist imagery of the end of the decade also drew in Lembit Tolli; he expanded his choice of materials, taking an interest in dolomite, the possibilities of wood sculpture, welded sculpture, epoxy resin and embossed metal. Alongside portrait and figure work, Tolli created masterful reliefs for Martin Saks and Endel Taniloo's monument to F. R. Kreutzwald in Kadriorg (1958) and the poetic bronze relief "Sõit maailma otsa" ["Journey to the End of the World"], based on motifs from the national epic, for the Ice Voyage obelisk (1960) at Maarjamäe in Tallinn.
