August Timus

1865–1943 · Estonian sculptor (1865-1943)
Viljandi Muuseum

trained at Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design

On 15 January 1920 the Ministry of War announced a competition for the design of a War of Independence commemorative medal. The competition was won by August Timus, also known as a sculptor. Incidentally, the following year August Timus took second place in the competition for the design of the Estonian state coat of arms, proposing as the coat of arms' main element an eagle in a style from which the emblem of the Defence League (Kaitseliit) later developed. There are also reports of small sculptures designed and executed by him: Kuperjanov, Irv and Sabolotnõi. (M. Reintam) (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
