Sergei Arsenjevitš Vinogradov

1869–1938
Eesti Kunstimuuseum; Viljandi Muuseum

He studied from 1880 to 1889 at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under V. D. Polenov, V. J. Makovski and others. From 1898 to 1913 he was a teacher at the S. G. Stroganov Institute of Applied Art in Moscow. In 1912 he became an academician of the Peterburg Academy of Arts, and in 1916 a full member of the Academy of Arts. From 1923 he lived in Riga. Although he belonged to the Society of Itinerant Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki) from 1880 to 1889, his work — especially from the 1910s onward — is nevertheless characterised rather by the impressionist manner of the Union of Russian Artists (VKL). He was also a founding member of that society (1903). At the same time he has also been named one of the best-known members of the Peredvizhniki group. He painted genre scenes, portraits, interiors and landscapes, mostly in a bright and sunny plein-air style. The best part of his work was created during the period when he was active in the VKL.
