1872–1953 · Estonian artist and art teacher (1872-1953)
Eesti Kunstimuuseum

trained at Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design

He was born in Tuhalaane Parish, Viljandimaa, and after finishing secondary school moved to St Petersburg, where he entered the Stieglitz School of Art, which he graduated from in 1902, becoming the first Estonian to complete studies in decorative and glass painting. He was elected by the school's council as head of the glass painting department, after which he went to further his professional knowledge in Paris and at the Royal Institute of Glass Painting in Munich. Later he went to Darmstadt for the same purpose, and painted, on commission from the Russian imperial court's chancery, a large glass painting for the mausoleum of the Peter and Paul Fortress. He also painted a glass-painting altarpiece for Vladimir Cathedral. In 1905 he was head of the interior decorative painting of the Russian church built in Darmstadt by Emperor Nicholas II. He travelled repeatedly to art schools and museums in Germany, France and Italy, as well as to Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Palestine and Syria. He was a drawing teacher for 13 years at the Peterhof gymnasium and at St Catherine's School in St Petersburg. In 1917 he graduated with a diploma from the Imperial Archaeological Institute. From 1918 to 1929 he was a teacher at Leningrad's 1st Realschule and was appointed professor at the Estonian Workers' University. In 1920 he returned to Estonia and began working at the State School of Applied Art, the Tallinn Technical School and the Conservatory. From 1925 to 1928 he was director of the Estonian Art Museum, from 1926 chairman of the Estonian Artists' Union, and from 1935 chairman of the Estonian Academic Association of Professional Artists. He retired in 1940. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
