Voldemar Noormägi

1895–1968
Narva Muuseum

World championship bronze medallist and 1924 Olympian Noormägi was the first athlete with a disability from Estonia to reach the Olympics. Namely he was deaf-mute (Eesti Spordileht: "Deaf-mute, he neither hears nor speaks, but nevertheless a fine weightlifter!"), who came to sport thanks to Georg Lurich. Lurich indeed visited the Vändra school for the deaf-mute precisely at the time when Noormägi was studying there. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
