Rein Mägar (1944) is a freelance artist dedicated to watercolour painting. He graduated from the Leipzig Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Design (1971) and has worked as an art editor at publishing houses (ER, Valgus, Bit). He began participating in exhibitions as a poster artist in 1972, became a member of the Artists' Union (1977), a member of the Estonian Union of Design Graphic Artists (1995) and a member of the Estonian Watercolourists' Union from 1998. Since then he has presented his watercolour work at all EAÜ exhibitions and, from 2012, also at the watercolour festivals organized by the European Confederation of Watercolour Societies (ECWS). Solo exhibitions have been held at the Vabaduse (2009, 2014), Draakoni (2020) and Viinistu barrel galleries (2022), as well as in many cultural institutions across Estonia. Rein Mägar has curated exhibitions at the Würth art gallery from 2005-2017 and EAÜ exhibitions at the Pärnu UKM and the Võru City Gallery, the latter three years' exhibitions being joint exhibitions with Finnish watercolourists. A joint exhibition of Estonian and Finnish watercolourists is being prepared at Kadrioru Galerii for January 2023. Rein Mägar has compiled and published three publications on the subject of watercolour: "Teekond akvarellidega" (2014), "Eesti Akvarell 2018" and the catalogue of the Estonian-Finnish joint exhibition "Mets/Metsä" (2022).
