Raivo Korstnik

1932–1992 · Estonian sculptor (1932-1992)
Allee galerii; E-Kunstisalong; Eesti Kunsti Oksjonid; Eesti Kunstimuuseum; Haus Galerii; Järvamaa Muuseum

trained at Estonian Academy of Arts

Raivo Korstnik (1932-1992) was born in Maidla, Ida-Virumaa. He received his art education at ERKI (1951–1957). After graduating from ERKI, the 1960s marked the beginning of Korstnik's best-known and most highly regarded period of creative work. This period also includes Korstnik's appearance at the 1966 youth exhibition, which is considered one of the most important displays in Estonian art history focused on new art. As far as is known, only one solo exhibition took place during the artist's lifetime. Although he was a well-known and recognized artist, he preferred working as a lecturer over active exhibition activity. Until his death Korstnik worked at the Estonian SSR State Art Institute (ERKI) and at the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute, while remaining connected in parallel to the world of television and film. Whereas earlier attention was mainly drawn to Korstnik's realistic works from the 1960s, mostly sea-themed paintings, industrial landscapes representing the "harsh style", and cityscapes with cubist touches, now it is the artist's surrealist works that attract the most attention. Surrealist elements can be found in the artist's early landscape paintings, nude paintings and sketches. During his lifetime the artist also frequently painted landscapes and views of Tallinn.
