In 1479 he took over his brother Gentile's work at the Doge's Palace. In 1483 Bellini was appointed the official painter of the city of Venezia. The most important influences on his work were Mantegna's works and the elements of Netherlandish art brought to Venetian painting by Antonella da Messina. Building on these, Bellini created his own distinctive style, in which warm and luminous light and a natural, calm atmosphere play an important role. Giovanni Bellini's main theme was the Madonna with the Christ Child. He was the most famous artist of the Venetian Madonnieri (Madonna painters) group. He also cultivated the Venetian-style composition of Santa Conversazione (the so-called sacred conversation). The background of his paintings was usually a lyrical landscape. To a lesser extent he also created portraits and genre paintings. His most famous pupils were Giorgione, Tizian and Lorenzo Lotto. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
