NOBA
Meriliis Rinne (MERU) is an artist born in Estonia who lives and works in the United Kingdom. Her work focuses on exploring tensions through abstract painting and abstracted female figures – the balance between structure and freedom, control and intuitiveness, and surface and depth. Her works address identity, memory, vulnerability and psychological space, transforming emotional experiences into materially and visually multilayered compositions. Rinne makes her own canvases and often uses recycled textiles, old fabrics and found materials in her works. For her, material is not merely a formal element but an inseparable part of the work, carrying within it time, touches and earlier stories. Surfaces built up layer by layer are created through scraping, covering, sanding and rebuilding, retaining traces of the process and reflecting change and resistance. Her female figures do not depict specific people, but rather function as intimated presences that arise and disperse within abstract fields of colour. Moving along the border between abstraction and figuration, they leave room for the viewer's interpretation and invite reflection on identity, the inner world and the human.
