A Baltic-German man of letters, Estophile and pastor. His father was a postmaster. He worked as a pastor in the congregations of Tori and Pärnu. From 1813 to 1832 he edited the first scholarly serial publication on Estonian subjects, the journal Beiträge zur genauern Kenntniss der ehstnischen Sprache. Under his leadership a theatre building was built in Pärnu in 1821. In 1814 he founded a school for Estonian schoolmasters in Pärnu, which was the first known pedagogical institution where teaching was conducted in Estonian. He published schoolbooks and organised the staging of the first plays in Estonian. With the help of pupils and confirmands he collected folklore. For decades he was engaged in collecting and bibliographing Estonian-language books and manuscripts. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
