Jean-Charles Le Vasseur

1734–1816 · French engraver (1734-1816)
Pärnu Muuseum

He was orphaned at the age of 11 and began studying under the Milanese painter Simone Peterzano. In 1593 he went to Rome, where he assisted the mannerist painter Giuseppe Cesari. As a pupil he was mainly allowed to depict fruits and flowers, and he indeed began his career as a painter of still lifes. Soon, however, he attracted the attention of important patrons. Thus he painted for cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte not only religious works, but also very sensual Bacchuses. The power and emotionality of his work, in which he distanced himself from overly refined mannerism, already made him one of the most influential artists of his time. His main commissions at that time were the decoration of the Contarelli Chapel in San Luigi dei Francesi, for which he painted in 1599–1600 the Martyrdom of Saint Matthew and the Calling of Saint Matthew, and the decoration of the Cerasi Chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo, for which he created the Conversion of Saint Paul and the Crucifixion of Saint Peter.
