Pärnu Muuseum
He received his initial education in his home town. Later he went to Paris and became a pupil of Jacques-Louis David. His work was noticed by Napoleon, and as a result in 1794 he became head of a group of experts tasked with selecting works of art in the Spanish Netherlands (now Belgium) to be sent to Paris. He performed the same duties in Italy. In 1800 he settled in Rome, where over the following 6 years he became an important portraitist in the circle of Napoleon I. In 1806 Joseph Bonaparte, as King of Italy, appointed him president of the Naples Academy of Art. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
