Jakob Jõgi

1875–1961
Pärnu Muuseum

He studied at the Karksi and Pöögle parish schools and worked for a while as a farmhand. He then studied wood carving from 1896 at Bandelier's furniture factory in Tartu and drawing at the Tartu German Crafts School. He worked in Riga under the wood carver Johanson, in Liepāja at the Ahi furniture factory, and in Odessa. From 1900 he worked at the Steinberg furniture factory in Rakvere until 1901–1904, when he settled permanently in Pärnu, where he worked as an independent wood carver. His works include the altar decorations of Pärnu Transfiguration of the Lord Church (1904), and writing desk sets for the Supreme Court (1935). In 1935 he organised exhibitions of his works in Pärnu and Tartu, where, among other things, "Ancient Estonian Life in 14 Pictures" was on display. Later he made a 27-picture work about Estonian life 100 years ago and in the present. The wood-cut relief displayed at the exhibition was acquired by the Estonian National Museum. He was a founder and leader of the Pärnu Animal Protection Society. For his services he received the 2nd class Green Cross of the Estonian Animal Protection League.
