Only a few examples of the landscape paintings of the 1930s have survived; a number of works were destroyed in the turmoil of the war. In September 1944, shortly before fleeing to Germany, Erich Leps took the majority of his works for safekeeping from the war to the museum then located on Elevandi Street, which was however damaged during bombing. Pre-war works can be found in the collections of various private individuals, collectors and art museums. The only work the artist managed to take with him while fleeing was "Ema portree" ["Portrait of Mother"], which, being unsigned and undated, is apparently one of the artist's earliest surviving works. The portrait against a dark background follows the technique characteristic of Rembrandt, the so-called "cellar-door lighting", where the light is directed in an even beam onto the object being painted.
