member of Accademia delle Arti del Disegno · member of Royal Academy of Arts
Italian-English copper engraver and draughtsman, etcher (also painter). He studied first for three years in Venice painting, then in 1745–1751 in Florence and in 1756–1760 in Rome copper engraving. He furthered his studies in Venice and there with J. Wagner. He settled in 1764 in London, where he developed a delicate-painterly style which had great success. There he became court engraver, in 1768 a member of the KA [Royal Academy]. He had his own studio with many pupils. He finished and signed some of the studio's works himself. He received at the time the most commissions for reproductions (after Kauffmann, Reynolds, Gainsborough, as well as old Italian masters). He published in Venice, Florence, from 1764 in Rome, then in Lisbon. He settled in 1802 in Lisbon, where he worked until his death as director of the Academy of Art. One of the first to apply the stipple manner, with success in it. He also experimented with the pencil (crayon) manner. He influenced English graphic art.
