Elfriide Maran

1905–1998 · Estonian sculptor (1905-1998)
Eesti Kunstimuuseum; Eesti Meremuuseum; Tartu Kunstimuuseum

trained at Pallas

Elfriide Maran (1905–1997) began her art studies in 1916–1918 at the School of Applied Arts in Pskov, in the ceramics speciality, studied painting in the early 1920s in Tartu in Konrad Mägi's studio, and worked for years as a seamstress of women's clothing. She then began sculpture studies in 1945 at the Tallinn State Institute of Applied Art, graduating from the ESSR State Art Institute in 1951. In the late 1950s, her work's limited realism following nature was replaced by a freer, more generalised formal effect. She has made works mainly in ceramic techniques, more rarely using marble. The portrait genre and decorative figural sculpture predominate in her work. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
