The cloth factory (Kalevivabrik) was founded in 1829, its product being woollen cloth - kalev. In 1858, 373 men and 430 women already worked at the Kärdla cloth factory. Although the factory's operations experienced short-term stoppages and harder times (in 1870 the factory burned down, after which a new four-storey building was completed in 1873; and at the turn of the century it faced economic difficulties), it was nevertheless the island's most important industrial enterprise until the First World War. In 1879 output was 200,000 arshins worth approximately 800,000 roubles. In 1908 the Narva Manufaktuur merged with the struggling Kärdla cloth factory. The Kärdla factory then produced 100,000 metres of cloth per year (about three times less than in 1879). In 1941 the factory was destroyed by fire.
