1982– · Estonian artist (born 1982)
Art & Tonic; Artrovert; Eesti Kunsti Oksjonid; NOBA; Osta Noort Kunsti; Tartu Kunstimuuseum
Alar Tuul (b. 1982) is one of the most recognisable and distinctive-styled artists among young Estonian authors. Tuul's automatistically naive picture surfaces, reminiscent of Karel Appel or Jean-Michel Basquiat, have over the years moved from isolated details towards ever greater generalisations. Stick figures and ring-eyed creatures have been preserved, but individual scenes no longer form a complete composition; instead they are parts of larger panoramas. Emotion (colour) has replaced calculation (line), the subconscious a clear motive, and from these views one can read out thousands of stories and construct ever new worlds.
