Woldemar Hau studied with his father and with Carl Ferdinand von Kügelgen, graduated from the Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1836, and afterwards furthered his education in Germany and Italy. In 1842 he became an Imperial Court artist and in 1849 an academician. He was one of Russia's most important masters of watercolour portraits.
