Mai Levin, Pearls from a Private Collection. Part Two. 2006. p. 11 (gallery "Rios"): "The Palmse daughters Olga and Maria von der Pahlen were artistically gifted. Old...the peasant woman in Maria von der Pahlen's watercolour has apparently belonged among the manor folk; the portrait speaks of a skill in characterisation and a certain training". Anu Allikvee: "Marie (Maria) Charlotte von der Pahlen (b. 18. XI 1852 in Tallinn) was the daughter of Diedrich von der Pahlen (1807-1894) and the sister of the artist Olga von der Pahlen (1856-1919). Her year of death is not known, but in 1930 she was still alive. (In 1930 the Genealogisches Handbuch der baltischen Ritterschaften, Teil Estland was compiled). Since, judging by her year of birth, she was already 78 years old in 1930, her death should fall in the 1930s or the early 1940s. Her name is not mentioned in art dictionaries, though there is information there about Olga. Unfortunately it is not known where Maria studied art. It is possible that the sisters had a common home art teacher, and later she may have received guidance from her sister Olga. Maria v.d. Pahlen's connection with the Palmse manor is rather indirect. She did descend from the Palmse branch of the Pahlen family, but not directly from the Palmse manor. Her father Diedrich was the owner of the Voore (Forell) manor, whose father, the artist's grandfather, Peter v.d. Pahlen (1777-1828), was likewise the owner of the Voore manor. Only Peter v.d. Pahlen's father, Arend Dietrich v.d. Pahlen (1738-1778), was born in Palmse as a child of the owner of the Palmse manor. But as a younger son he did not inherit his birth manor, and he became the owner of the Koila (Koil) manor in Virumaa". (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
