Hiiumaa Muuseumid
Author's commentary: "These two works are from the series "Atlas of Contour Maps of Hiiumaa", which is a bow to my ancestors and simply a small declaration of love for Hiiumaa. I am a Hiiumaa islander on my mother's side and have spent all my happy childhood summers on Hiiumaa, at my grandmother Sooster Elvi's in Jausa and at her native home in Sinimal. The Kupitsa farm in Sinimal has fortunately always been inhabited and preserved almost in full glory, unlike the Pendi farm in Ühtri, where my grandfather Julius Sooster came from. On the Ühtri map that has reached the museum are my mother's cousin Ülo Sooster and junipers "borrowed" from his paintings. On the Tärkma map is Ülo's father Johannes Sooster, a well-known instrument maker, who in his Tärkma workshop made instruments from kannel to double bass. I do not know whether it is a nice legend, or whether it is true that in his time he made so many mandolins that all the schools of Hiiumaa had mandolin ensembles. The series originally had 21 works from different villages of Hiiumaa that are important to me, the people and birds and animals are all connected with Hiiumaa. The maps are drawn from the flying height of a crane, the roads, coastline and land holdings as of the year 2021. The maps are coloured in the striped pattern of the respective village's skirt stripes; in choosing the stripes I was greatly helped by your compiled booklet "Hiiumaa Skirt Stripes". The maps are drawn digitally and the edition of each map's giclée print is 50. Additions have been made to the original 21 maps of Hiiumaa, I have made 4 more maps on commission."
