After completing the artillery academy he was sent to the front with the 3rd Artillery Brigade of the Guards. During the Civil War he fought on the White Guard side and evacuated to Turkey together with Wrangel's army. In 1922 he came to Estonia, where at first he worked as an unskilled labourer at a sawmill, later as a draughtsman at the Ministry of Agriculture and as a draughtsman at a textile factory. He illustrated books and designed theatre sets and postcards. He took part in local Russian literary societies. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
