Karl Joonas Alamaa is an artist and fashion designer with a background as a tailor, who has studied fashion and costume design at the Estonian Academy of Arts and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. He is a laureate of the Eduard Wiiralt Prize, a nominee for Hõbenõel 2021, has participated with the multimedia work ONLY BASIC and with author collections at Tallinn Fashion Week. In the summer of 2022 Alamaa had an exhibition at HOP gallery, Tallinn. Alamaa has also presented his work at the ERKI fashion show. In addition, he has performed with performances at the Zuidpool theatre in Antwerp, at the Sõltumatu Tantsu Laud, and together with Lisette Sivard organized an action with a giant Rainbow flag at Teatri väljak in Tallinn. His works have been shown at exhibitions in Estonia, Finland and Belgium. Alamaa's work encompasses the everydayness of being human and the dissection and questioning of social constructs, dealing among other things with the relationships between gender, fashion and the body. In his work Alamaa deals with several mediums, from installation and performance to the creation of costumes and collections, interpreting them through fashion. He often tends to approach topics through sensitive and contradictory points of recent history, thereby touching on the complexes of Estonia's and Eastern Europe's past and.
