Already in childhood Kaljo Simson showed skill in drawing and exhibited at school exhibitions both in Estonia and Sweden. During his arrest in 1949, according to the artist, 500 drawings, watercolours and oil paintings were destroyed. In the camp he worked as an artist, fulfilling commissioned works. From that time, postcard designs, sketches and portrait drawings have survived. It was then that the artist developed a deeper interest in depicting the human face and nature, which continued later throughout his entire creative period.
