Eesti Ajaloomuuseum
1862-64 teacher at the Birkenruh county gymnasium (near Cesis). From 1864 senior teacher of ancient languages and German literature at the Kuressaare progymnasium (from 1865 - gymnasium). As an active public figure, the teacher took a leading part in the establishment of the town park, the founding of a savings bank, and the establishment of a fire brigade society. Holzmayer's greatest merits are as a researcher of antiquities. Under his direction archaeological excavations were carried out at the Kaarma hill fort, the Pöide Order castle, etc. Thanks to his activity, Saaremaa and Muhumaa were, in the second half of the 19th century, one of the archaeologically best-studied areas in the Baltic provinces. Founding member of the Society for the Study of Saaremaa (Verein zur Kunde Oesels), vice-president of the society and curator of the museum 1867-1890.
