He received his art education in Moscow under academician Sherwood and worked in St. Petersburg under Premazzi and Shishtyakov. In 1870 he was granted the title of free artist and in 1874 he was named an honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
