Sampu chose poster design as his institute graduation work and remained a poster artist for more than two decades. In the sixties he also designed several books and postcards, mostly as commissioned work for the Estonian State Publishing House (1948–1962), and later for the publishing houses Eesti Raamat, Kunst and Perioodika. Sampu's design graphic work was created alongside his main job at the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute, where he worked as an art lecturer from 1960 to 1980.
