Georg Christoph Grooth

1716–1749
Narva Muuseum; Tallinna Linnamuuseum

German painter and restorer, who worked in portraiture and icon painting. He received his art education from his father, Johann Friedrich Groot, court artist in Stuttgart and keeper of the Ludwigsburg picture gallery. He worked in Dresden, Danzig and Prague. At the invitation of the governor-general of Estland, W. von Loewendael, he came to Tallinn and from there moved on to Peterburg, where he became court artist to the regent Anna Leopoldovna and, after 1741, to Empress Jelizaveta Petrovna. In 1742 he took part, together with L. Caravaque and I. Vinjakov, in decorating Moscow for Jelizaveta's coronation festivities. From 1743 he was keeper and restorer of the imperial art collection, and was also involved in expanding it. From 1743 his brother, the animal painter Johann Friedrich Grooth (1717-1801), also worked in Russia. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
