1922–2009 · Estonian sculptor (1922-2009)
Eesti Ajaloomuuseum; Eesti Kunstimuuseum; Eesti Teatri- ja Muusikamuuseum; Tallinna Linnamuuseum; Tartu Kunstimuuseum
trained at Estonian Academy of Arts
In her post-studies positions as head of the fine arts department of the Ministry of Culture's Central Board of Arts (1952-55), as chief artist of the Estonian pavilion at the USSR National Economic Achievements Exhibition in Moscow (1961-64) and also as a freelance artist, Erika Haggi succeeded in adapting well to the ideological demands of Soviet cultural life and in finding influential friends who helped realise the ambitions of her artistic personality. In 1955 she completed a full figure of the then prima ballerina Helmi Puur. In the following decades too, Erika Haggi devoted herself mainly to portraying Estonian cultural figures. Among her works one recalls the Nordic-granite pieces August Jansen, Heino Eller, Tiit Kuusik, and the granite bust of Georg Ots unveiled in the foyer of Estonia in his jubilee year, 1977. She has also portrayed well-known athletes. Alongside her portrait work, the sculptor was also interested in the decorative genre. Among her decorative works one might first mention the dark granite torso “Meremehe pruut” (“The Sailor's Bride”), which adorns the green area in front of the Tallinn Art Hall. Erika Haggi's sculptural image also includes portraits of Estonian revolutionaries of the time (for example Olga Lauristin and Juliane Tellmann), as well as the figure of the sailor Jevgeni Nikonov, a Soviet hero, which has by now been removed from Kadriorg. The best of Erika Haggi's work is concentrated mainly in the collections of the Art Museum of Estonia, the Theatre and Music Museum, and several cultural institutions.
