Sai algõpetuse kunstnikust isa Johannes Hau juures Tallinnas. Aastast 1830 õppis paar aastat Dresdeni kunstiakadeemias. 1836 tuli Tartusse, alustas oma suurt professorite portreede sarja (Sammlung von Portraits der Professoren an der Kaiserlichen Universität zu Dorpat seit dem Jahre 1837 nach dem Leben und auf Stein gezeichnet von E. Hau), mis trükiti 1837–1839 G. Fr. Schlateri litograafiatöökojas (kokku 6 vihku 30 portreega). 1839 lahkus Tartust, arvatavasti suundus peatselt Peterburi, tegutses seal peamiselt portretisti, hiljem interjöörimaalijana, jäädvustades akvarellis keiserlike paleede sisevaateid Peterburis ja selle ümbruses. 1854 sai akadeemikuks. Suri Tartus.
