He settled in Tartu in the 1850s, starting out as a draughtsman for L. Höflinger, opened his own lithography workshop in 1858. From 1859-1861 he also managed a book printing house. After difficulties, he reopened a lithography workshop and photographic studio in Tartu in 1866, at the corner of Rüütli and Küütri Streets in the Schramm building, later moved it to the corner of Vana and Aia Streets, and finally moved to Riga.
