Andreas von Löwis of Menar was born on 4 January 1778 (according to the old calendar, at the end of 1877) in Vanamõisa, Kirbla parish, Läänemaa, as the son of a retired general. In 1794–97 he was in military service in St. Petersburg, serving as a sergeant-major in the cavalry. In 1801 he moved to study at Jena and in 1803 at the University of Heidelberg, and in 1806–1808 he studied at the Schwetzingen forestry institute. In 1811 von Löwis of Menar was elected secretary of the Livonian Public Benefit and Economic Society located in Riga. He organised its activities and was the editor of the society's publications. He then moved to Tartu and probably studied art under C. A. Senff. From 1816–39 he took part in the trigonometric survey of Livonia and the compilation of maps, conducted under the direction of Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve. His most important work is his self-illustrated overview of the knightly castles of Livonia: Denkmäler aus der Vorzeit Liv- und Estlands I-II (1821, 1827). He died at Kaipen (Keipene) manor in Latvia/Livonia. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
