The artist was born in St. Petersburg. He came to Hiiumaa after the 1917 revolution, where he worked as the driver for the director of the Kärdla Cloth Factory; his father Nikolai (1873-1933) was a doctor on Hiiumaa. Around 1939 he moved to live on Saaremaa. He was arrested in 1945 in Kuressaare, the tribunal's decision of 19.06.1945 under paragraph 58-1a, 15+5 years.
