1869–1924
Eesti Kunstimuuseum; Narva Muuseum
Studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture; in 1894-95 studied at the Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1911 became an academician of the Petersburg Academy of Arts and in 1913 a professor. Founded an art studio bearing his own name, together with the artist A.I. Lashetšnikov founded a publishing house issuing art postcards, and compiled painting textbooks. Was a member of the Society for Travelling Exhibitions, one of the last chairmen of the society, and exhibited his works mainly at the peredvizhniki exhibitions. The bulk of his oeuvre consists of realistic, light-filled, freely painted views of town and countryside, while his main source of income was, as expected, portraiture, which, given the taste of his bourgeois patrons, was much sweeter and more idealising.
