He also taught painting to his brother Aleksander Nikolajevitš Benua. Since he also found recognition at court, he was appointed to positions of responsibility. Thus he was the first curator of the Russian Museum in Petersburg (from 1895) and inspector of the art department of the Department (later Ministry) of Trade and Manufactures. As an architect he took part in the reconstruction of the Petersburg department store "Gostinnõi Dvor" in 1886-87 and in the design of A. F. Rõzhov's villa in the 1880s. After the revolution he took an active part in reorganising museum life, until he soon became disillusioned in the new society. For this reason he emigrated to France in 1924, but in his last years was no longer able to work due to illness. (machine translation of the holder's Estonian text, unedited)
