Artist Albert Gulk was born in 1969 in Antsla. In 1996 he graduated from the painting department of the University of Tartu. He has worked as a teacher at the Tartu Children's Art School, currently a freelance artist. He has taken part in exhibitions since 1988. In the same year, together with Ilmar Kruusamäe, Peeter Allik and Priit Pangsepp, he founded the Kursi school in Tartu. He has been a member of the Estonian Artists' Association since 1995. Albert Gulk's works are characterised by a distinctive drawing style, in which he follows the rules of monumental art and the panel-like manner of presentation. Art historian Eha Komissarov has said that the certainty and conviction of Gulk's working manner immediately raised him into the front ranks of Estonian drawing. Albert Gulk's original artistry is underlined by the fact that the artist uses neither a model nor the help of a photograph in his drawings, relying solely on the images of his visual memory.
